From 1950 onwards, many of the experienced Homoeopathy Medical Practitioners, Diploma / Degree holders in Homoeopathy from all over India were practicing Homoeopathy System in many places in the State of Tamil Nadu without any registration and statutory provision. After repeated representations from the Homoeo Medical Practitioners and Homoeopathy Associations in Tamil Nadu, the Government has considered and constituted the high level committee to prepare the Bill to regulate the Medical Practitioners of Homoeopathy in Tamil Nadu. The Committee finalised and prepared the Bill in all aspects and place it before the Tamil Nadu Assembly for enactment in year 1970. The Legislative Assembly of Tamil Nadu approved the bill and sent to the bill in the Act Form to the Government of India for the assent of the President of India. The President of India given an ascent in the year 1971 and the Homoeopathy Act was enacted for the development of Homoeopathy System and Medical Practitioners.
The Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy Medical Council has been constituted by an enactment under the provisions of the Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy System of Medicine & Practitioners of Homoeopathy Act 1971, in the year 1972 the first council has been nominated by the Government under the Presidentship of Dr. C. Sriramulu. At the time of constitution of the council, one Homoeopathy Medical College has been functioning at Madurai offering DHMS course in the name of Madurai Homoeopathy Medical College, Madurai under the Chairmanship of Dr. Thangaraj & the Principal of the College Dr. K.V. Joseph. The Board of Examinations constituted by the Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy council under the Chairmanship of Dr. A.U. Sriram, DHMS examinations were conducted and the first batch of final year DHMS students were passed out in the year 1973 - 1974. Due to some administrative problem, the Madurai Homoeopathy College was closed by the Management in the year 1974-75.
The Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy Medical Council and its Registrar Thiru J.G. Sambandam and the President Dr. S.P. Koppikar have taken serious steps and move the Government for opening Homoeopathy Medical College at Chennai. The Government considered the request of the council and gracious enough issued G.O for opening Homoeopathy Medical College at Chennai in the campus of Kilpauk Medical College in the year 1975. The students of the defunct Madurai Homoeopathy Medical College were admitted in the Government Homoeopathy Medical College, Chennai after conducting screening test.
In the year 1973, the Management of the White Memorial Homoeopathy Medical College, K.K. District has applied to the Council for affiliation and recognition for conducting DHMS course. After a long struggle, the college, was affiliated by the Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy Medical council in the year 1978. The management of the Vinayaka Missions Homoeopathy Medical College, Salem has applied to the council for affiliation / recognition for conducting DHMS course. The council granted affiliation / recognition in the year 1974.
At present, there are 10 Homoeopathy Medical College are functioning in the State of Tamil Nadu. 1 (One) Government Homoeopathy Medical College & 9 (Nine) self-financing colleges.
The Central Council of Homoeopathy has been constituted by the Government of India by an enactment under the provisions of Central Council of Homoeopathy Act, 1973. The DHMS, BHMS, M.D.(Hom.) syllabus for the Homoeopathy Medical Colleges functioning all over India, minimum Standard of Education Regulation for opening Homoeopathy Medical Colleges in India were formulated by Central Council of Homoeopathy with the approval of Government of India under the provisions of the Central Council of Homoeopathy Act in the year 1983. In Tamil Nadu. The Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University has been constituted by an enactment under the provisions of Tamilnadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University Act, 1987. The Homoeopathy Medical Colleges functioning in the state are swichover from DHMS to BHMS from the academic year 1988 under the affiliation of the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University and the recognition of Central Council of Homoeopathy.
At present, the Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy Medical Council has been functioning under the Presidentship of Dr. G.P. Hahnemann, Madurai and Advisor to Government, Government of Tamil Nadu. There are about 15,000 doctors have been registered under class 'B' & 'C' on experience basis and about 5000 doctors have been registered in the council under class 'A' after passing Degree / Diploma from recognised Homoeopathy Medical Colleges in India and practising Homoeopathy in all over Tamil Nadu. There are about 40 dispensaries are functioning in the District Head Quarters Hospital of Tamil Nadu and 57 Homoeopathy doctors are working under N.R.H.M. scheme all over Tamil Nadu. Two (2) years D.Pharmacy course have been conducted by the Board of Examinations under the Chairmanship of Dr. G.P. Hahnemann and passed out students were working in all Government dispensaries. At present, the Vinayaka Homoeopathy Medical College, Salem and the Saradha Krishna Homoeopathy Medical College, K.K. District have offering P.G. course in Homoeopathy in Tamil Nadu.
Under the keen interest of the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Hon'ble Health Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Principal Secretary to Government, Health & Family Welfare Department, the Director of Indian Medicine & Homoeopathy, AYUSH Department, the Central Council of Homoeopathy, the Tamil Nadu Homoeopathy Medical Council and the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, the system of Homoeopathy and Medical Practitioners of Homoeopathy are developing gradually and steadily to serve the public in Tamil Nadu by way of treating the patients and curing the decease with the help of dynamic System of Homoeopathy and the principle of founder Dr. Samuel Hahnemann.
